Ocean Fishing

Oregon’s ocean offers a variety of fishing opportunities. For the ocean-going angler, whether on a private boat or a charter, there’s trolling for halibut, tuna, salmon and bottom fish.
From shore, anglers fish for rockfish and other bottom fish near rocky jetties, or surf perch off sandy beaches.
Crabbing is at its hottest between August and November. Locals crab the docks in Old Town or head up the South Jetty to the old Coast Guard dock. Cages can be rented at many locations, day old poultry is the preferred bait. Limit 12 males, 5 3/4"
Both mud clams and razor clams can be taken in the local area. Mud clamming at low tide along the Siuslaw River on Hwy 126 is a favorite. Others prefer the tasty razor clam that can be found at the Hobbit Trail beach and others. 15 Razor Clam, 20 Bay Clam Limit.
Limits: 72 Mussels, 1 Abalone, 10 Starfish

Siuslaw River

The Siuslaw River and its bay can be among Oregon's elite fall chinook salmon fishing systems, with 3,000 to 5,000 big kings harvested during its better runs.Chinook, coho, steelhead, and sea-run cutthroat were once abundant in the lower river, but now the coho and cutthroat fisheries are closed owing to huge declines in fish numbers. However, anglers still fish for chinook and steelhead, and the jetties are good places to catch surfperch, rockfish, lingcod, and sole.
Sturgeon were once a popular fish in the Siusaw and with proper conservation measures, hopefully they will be again in the near future. These pre-historic monsters are an exhilarating challenge to catch, and provide a hearty serving of earthy .

Angling Ethics

ACheck river or stream regulations as many have different designations in order to maintain Oregon's treasured wild salmon and steelhead stocks. The following catch & release tips will minimize injury to wild fish, according to the Oregn Dept of Fish and Wildlife.

  • Use barbless hooks. While barbless hooks are not mandatory on most of Oregon’s fisheries, they can be easier to remove from fish and anglers (this reducing stress to both.

  • Land your fish quickly to help increase survival rates.

  • Use needle nose pliers to remove deeply imbedded hooks. If you can’t remove the hook without harming the fish, cut the leader. The hook will rust out after a few days in the water.

  • Keep your fish in at least six inches of water while releasing it. Fish can be injured if allowed to flop on shore. Grasp fish by the tail and place your other hand under the belly, lifting slightly. If you plan to take a photograph of the fish, make sure that you have framed the picture and focused the camera before taking the fish out of water, and then only hold the fish out of water (preferably only partly out of water) for one or two seconds.

  • Revive the fish before release. Keep the fish upright facing into the current. If current is slow, move fish back and forth slowly to help oxygenate the gills.
